Medicinal herb

Rosehip

Rosa canina L. agg

The dog rose (Rosa canina) is a thorny shrub with white and pink flowers whose red fruit ripens after the first frost. The fruit is used, cleared of seeds and hairs. Traditionally used as a source of vitamin C in winter tea blends and in recovery after a cold.

About the herb

What rosehip is

the fruit of the dog rose (Cynosbati fructus)

The dog rose (Rosa canina) is a thorny shrub growing to three metres, with white and pink flowers; by autumn these become the red fruits called rosehips. It grows at the edges of woods, along boundaries, on pastures and on embankments all over Slovenia.

The fruit is gathered when it is red and still firm, while after the first frost it is sweeter and softer. For tea the fruit is cut open, the seeds and the irritating hairs are scraped out, and it is dried quickly at a low temperature so that it stays red; drying too slowly turns it brown. For jam the soft fruit after the frost is used.

With its sour, fruity taste the rosehip is the base of the fruit blends. In Ašič's collection the fruit appears in the Strengthening Tea, House Tea, Family Tea, For Children and After Exertion blends.

Use and evidence

A few clinical studies of standardised powders suggest a small reduction in pain in osteoarthritis, but the results are not consistent enough for a general medicinal claim. The broad statements in the original are narrowed.

Safety and precautions

The hairs inside the fruit irritate the skin and the mucous membranes; digestive trouble and allergies are possible.

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
