Hibiscus
Hibiscus sabdariffa L
Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), also called roselle, is an annual of the mallow family grown in the tropics. What goes into the tea is not the petals but the fleshy scarlet calyces, which thicken around the fruit after flowering. Traditionally drunk as a pleasantly sour tea, on its own or in blends.
What hibiscus is
the calyces of hibiscus (Hibisci flos)
Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), also called roselle, is an annual of the mallow family grown in tropical countries; here it does not thrive out of doors. What is used in the tea is not the corolla but the fleshy calyx, which thickens after flowering and is bright red.
The calyces are picked when fleshy and red, and are dried; dried, they are dark red and sour. It is they that give the infusion its ruby colour and the fruit acidity by which hibiscus is recognisable in any blend.
In Ašič's collection hibiscus is one of the few ingredients that do not grow here and that are bought from a supplier with a verified origin. It appears in the After Exertion blend and in the fruit blends.
Use and evidence
The EMA has no herbal monograph for hibiscus, so there is no recognised medicinal use. The EFSA rejected the claims that it encourages the passing of water and that it acts on the bowel. The sour taste comes from fruit acids; this is a refreshing drink, not a medicine. EFSA.
Safety and precautions
As a food it is regarded as safe. Since there is no recognised medicinal use, hibiscus tea does not replace medicines. If you take medicines to lower blood pressure, consult a doctor or a pharmacist about taking larger quantities regularly. The data for pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
