The nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial with stinging hairs, growing on nitrogen-rich ground beside paths, at the edges of fields and around muck heaps. The leaf and the root are both used, and they are not interchangeable. Traditionally the leaf is used in the spring cleanse and to pass water, the root for difficulty passing water in men.

The nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial with toothed leaves and stinging hairs that release formic acid on contact. It grows wherever the soil is rich in nitrogen: beside paths, at the edges of fields, around muck heaps and behind byres. That is exactly why it is the most widespread medicinal plant in Ašič's collection and appears in the most blends.

The young leaves and shoot tips are gathered from spring until the start of flowering, best with gloves and shears; after flowering the leaves harden and are no longer suitable. The root is dug in autumn or early spring and is a separate drug, not used in place of the leaf. It is dried in the shade; dried leaves lose their sting.

In Ašič's collection the leaf of the nettle appears in the UroSIT, VodaSIT, MetaSIT, DiaSIT, HepaSIT and Strengthening Tea blends and in several others, and in Nettle Drops as well.

Use and evidence

There is not enough good clinical evidence for treating vaginal discharge, irregular menstruation, insomnia or diseases of the urinary tract.

Safety and precautions

The safety of medicinal doses is not well established; gynaecological symptoms call for a diagnosis and are not suitable for self-treatment out of hand.

Are there any warnings about its use?

The product is no substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy way of life. Its use is no substitute for treatment with prescribed medicines. Ask a doctor about use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
