About the herb

What birch is

the leaf of silver birch (Betulae folium)

The birch (Betula pendula) is a tree with its characteristic white bark, which peels away in strips, and drooping twigs. It grows on poor, sandy and acid soil, and is often the first to take over abandoned ground, which is why it is called a pioneer tree.

The young leaves are gathered in spring, in May, while they are still light green and sticky; older leaves harden and are no longer suitable. They are gathered from low branches in dry weather and dried in the shade, spread out in a thin layer. Birch sap is drawn early in spring by boring into the trunk, which harms the tree if the wound is not closed.

In Ašič's collection the leaf appears in the VodaSIT, UroSIT, MetaSIT, DiaSIT, Lenten Tea, PutiSIT and Proti celulitu blends; it is one of the most used plants in the collection.

Use and evidence

The EMA recognises traditional use to increase the amount of urine, to flush the urinary tract in minor complaints, alongside drinking enough fluid. It does not support treatment of kidney stones, diabetes or obesity. EMA.

Safety and precautions

Not suitable where fluid intake is restricted, for instance in severe heart or kidney disease. Allergic reactions are possible.

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
