About the herb

What dandelion is

the leaf and root of dandelion (Taraxaci folium, radix)

The dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a perennial with a deep tap root, a rosette of toothed leaves at ground level and a yellow head on a hollow stem which, when broken, runs with white milky sap. It grows wherever there is the least bit of soil, from meadows to cracks in paving.

The leaves are gathered in spring, before flowering, while they are still soft and least bitter; after flowering they turn tough. The root is dug in autumn, when the reserve substances have gathered in it, or early in spring before it shoots; it is washed, cut lengthways and dried in the shade or at a low temperature. The flowers are gathered for syrup at full flowering, at midday.

The leaf and the root are different drugs with different uses. In Ašič's collection the leaf of the dandelion appears in the MetaSIT, ŽoSIT, HepaSIT and For Children blends, and the root in VodaSIT.

Use and evidence

The EMA recognises traditional use to relieve mild dyspepsia and temporary loss of appetite, and in some preparations to increase the urine. It does not treat diabetes, hepatitis or gallstones. EMA.

Safety and precautions

Not suitable where the bile ducts are blocked or in certain diseases of the gall bladder; allergies to the daisy family are possible. When it is used to pass water, enough fluid must be drunk.

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
