Equisetum arvense L
Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is a flowerless perennial which grows in jointed sections, in fields and on embankments; it can be mistaken for marsh horsetail, which is not for use. The green summer stem is used. Traditionally used to flush the urinary tract.
the herb of field horsetail (Equiseti herba)
Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is a flowerless perennial that reproduces by spores; in spring it sends up a pale fertile shoot, and in summer a green, jointed and branched stem shoot that looks like a small spruce. It grows in fields, on embankments and on damp, sandy soil.
The green summer shoots are gathered from June to August, without the roots. They are dried quickly and in the shade; dried horsetail is rough to the touch, because it contains silica.
Care is essential when gathering: marsh horsetail (Equisetum palustre) is poisonous and resembles it, but is told apart by its thicker joints and darker sheaths. It is gathered only where the identification is certain. In Ašič's collection it appears in the UroSIT, VodaSIT, Lenten Tea, Men's Tea and PutiSIT blends.
The EMA recognises traditional use to increase the urine in minor urinary complaints and as external help with superficial wounds. It does not treat osteoporosis, kidney stones or bleeding. EMA 1, EMA 2.
Enough fluid must be drunk; it is not suitable where fluid has to be restricted. Getting the species wrong and using it over a long period are a further risk.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
