Cowslip
Primula veris L
The cowslip (Primula veris) is a low spring perennial with yellow flowers, found in meadows and at the edges of woods. The flower and the root are used. Traditionally used for a cough where coughing up is difficult.
What cowslip is
the flower and root of cowslip (Primulae flos, radix)
The cowslip (Primula veris) is a low spring perennial with wrinkled leaves in a rosette at ground level and yellow, fragrant flowers in a one-sided umbel. It grows in dry meadows and at the edges of woods, and flowers in March and April, among the first after winter.
The flowers with their calyx are gathered, or the root. The flowers are gathered in the morning in dry weather and dried quickly in the shade, or they turn brown. The root is dug in autumn or early spring, washed and dried at a low temperature.
In many places the cowslip is protected or its gathering restricted, so preparations use cultivated plants; it is not dug up in the wild. In Ašič's collection the root of the cowslip appears in Mullein Syrup, and the flower in the PutiSIT blend.
Use and evidence
The EMA recognises the root as a traditional expectorant for a productive cough with a cold. Claims about migraine, the heart or paralysis are not confirmed. EMA 1, EMA 2.
Safety and precautions
Digestive trouble and allergies are possible. Gathering in the wild may be restricted; with difficult breathing or a cough that goes on, a doctor is needed.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
