What lime is
the flower of lime (Tiliae flos)
The lime (Tilia cordata and Tilia platyphyllos) is a long-lived tree with heart-shaped leaves whose scent fills a whole village in June. The flowers hang in clusters, each with a long bract by which lime blossom can be recognised even when dried. In Slovenia the lime is the tree of village centres and monastery courtyards.
The flower head is gathered together with its bract, in the first days of flowering, in the morning in dry weather; later the flowers turn brown and lose their scent. The gathering lasts barely a week or two a year. It is dried in the shade, in a thin layer and without turning, because dry flowers crumble.
Several species of the genus Tilia and their hybrids may be used for the medicinal drug. In Ašič's collection the flower of the lime appears in Family Tea and in the DiaSIT and VpresSIT blends.
Use and evidence
The traditional use of lime blossom is limited to relieving the symptoms of a cold and of mild mental stress; it does not treat pneumonia or diseases of the heart. EMA.
