What lady's bedstraw is
the herb of lady's bedstraw (Galii veri herba)
Lady's bedstraw (Galium verum) is a slender perennial with small yellow flowers in dense panicles and narrow leaves in whorls; in flower it smells of honey and hay. It grows in dry meadows and on embankments. The related cleavers (Galium aparine) clings by small hooks and is a different species.
The flowering herb is gathered in June and July, in dry weather; the upper part of the shoot is cut. It is dried in the shade, quickly and in a thin layer, because the plants are small and stick together easily.
In folk tradition lady's bedstraw was used to curdle milk, and one of its names comes from that. In Ašič's collection the herb appears in the MetaSIT blend, where it is an ingredient found in no other blend.
Use and evidence
There is no reliable clinical evidence for either species for treating cancer, diseases of the thyroid or the kidneys, or epilepsy.
Safety and precautions
The safety of medicinal doses has not been adequately researched; pooling the data for the two species is wrong as a matter of expertise.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
