About the herb

What elecampane is

the root of elecampane (Inulae radix)

Elecampane (Inula helenium) is a stately perennial with large leaves, felted underneath, and yellow heads, growing to over two metres. It is native to south-eastern Europe and Asia; here it is grown in gardens and in places grows wild around farmsteads where it was planted as a medicinal plant.

The root is dug in autumn in the second or third year, when it is thick enough; it is washed, cut into pieces and dried at a low temperature. The dried root smells of camphor and is bitter.

Elecampane can be mistaken for other species of the genus Inula, which are not interchangeable with it. In Ašič's collection the root of elecampane appears in the PutiSIT blend.

Use and evidence

There is not enough good clinical evidence for treating tuberculosis, asthma, diabetes or parasites.

Safety and precautions

Contact allergies are common where there is sensitivity to the daisy family; larger doses can cause digestive trouble. Medicinal doses are avoided in pregnancy.

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
