About the herb

What bean is

the pod of bean (Phaseoli pericarpium)

The bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is a well known garden vegetable of which herbalism uses not the seed we eat, but the pericarp, that is the empty pod without the beans.

The pods are collected when dry beans are shelled, in autumn, when they are completely dry and crumble; the beans are picked out, and the empty pods are broken up and dried the rest of the way at a low temperature. Only sound, unspoilt pods free of mould are gathered.

Raw beans contain substances that are destroyed only by cooking, and do not belong in an infusion; the pod alone is used. In Ašič's collection the bean pod appears in the PutiSIT blend.

Use and evidence

The EMA allows only increasing the urine to flush the urinary tract in minor complaints as traditional use. Claims about treating diabetes, sciatica or diseases of the kidneys are not supported. EMA 1, EMA 2.

Safety and precautions

Raw or undercooked beans contain phytohaemagglutinin and can cause severe digestive trouble; enough fluid must be drunk when it is used to pass water.

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
