Bruises and swelling: the herbal pharmacy's answer

Published 1 min read

Bruises and swelling

Customer's question

After exercise I often get bruises and sore muscles. Does anything help?

The pharmacist's answer

For the first twenty-four hours, cooling is more effective than any ointment. Only after that does care make sense.

Arnica is the herb that has been traditionally used for this the longest. Arnica Ointment promotes the circulation in the skin and so stimulates its function; Massage Oil is also used for care after exertion.

Apply with a light massage, in the direction towards the heart.

Never on an open wound or broken skin. If the swelling is large, appeared after a fall or you cannot put weight on the limb, it may be a fracture and belongs with a doctor, not under an ointment.
