Common mallow
Malva sylvestris L
Common mallow (Malva sylvestris) is a biennial with violet-striped flowers, growing beside paths, on ruins and on manured ground. The flower and the leaf are used, both rich in mucilage. Traditionally used for a dry irritating cough and as a gargle.
What common mallow is
the flower of common mallow (Malvae flos)
Common mallow (Malva sylvestris) is a biennial or short-lived perennial with violet-striped flowers and roundish, wrinkled leaves. It grows beside paths, on ruins, on muck heaps and at the edges of gardens, that is where the soil is rich.
The flowers are gathered as they come, because they open one after another all summer, or the leaves before flowering. The flowers are dried quickly and in the shade; dried properly they stay blue-violet, and brown ones are spoilt. An infusion of the flowers is mucilaginous, which is the sign that they were dried properly.
Common mallow must not be confused with marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), a different plant with a stronger root. In Ašič's collection the flower of common mallow appears in the PuroSIT and Chest Tea blends.
Use and evidence
The EMA recognises the flower for the traditional soothing of irritation of the mouth and throat with a dry cough, and of mild digestive complaints. It does not treat pneumonia, ulcers or diseases of the kidneys. EMA.
Safety and precautions
Mucilages can slow the absorption of other medicines, so an interval makes sense. With difficult breathing or symptoms that go on, an examination is needed.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
