Valerian Drops

Valerian drops are an extract of valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) in a water and alcohol solution, at a ratio by weight of 1 : 7 between the root and the solution. The scent is distinctly earthy, which is the mark of a genuine root, and the taste is bitter; they are therefore taken diluted in a cup of tea or water. In folk tradition valerian is used in the evening, when restlessness makes falling asleep difficult, and Father Simon Ašič recommended the drops when tea was not enough. A herb does not work at once. The drops may reduce alertness at the wheel. The collection also holds the Good Night Drops, a blend of several plants. The drops are made in the Father Simon Ašič Herbal Pharmacy at Stična by steeping the plant in a water and alcohol solution; the ratio is given under the composition. Dose: 15 drops in a cup of tea or water, three times a day. They contain alcohol and are not suitable for children, or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Keep out of reach of children. The drops are no substitute for treatment.
