About the herb

What vervain is

the herb of vervain (Verbenae herba)

Vervain (Verbena officinalis) is a slender perennial with an angular stem and small pale violet flowers set in thin, long spikes which flower from the bottom upwards. It grows beside paths, on embankments, on pastures and on ruins, on dry and sunny ground.

The flowering herb is gathered in July and August, in dry weather; the upper part of the shoot is cut, without the woody part. It is dried in the shade, in a thin layer. The dried plant is almost without scent and markedly bitter.

Vervain must not be confused with lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora), which shops often sell under the name verbena and which is an altogether different plant. In Ašič's collection vervain appears in the Nosopret blend.

Use and evidence

There is not enough good evidence for treating diseases of the liver or the kidneys, for depression or for encouraging breastfeeding.

Safety and precautions

Medicinal doses are avoided in pregnancy; safety while breastfeeding and in children has not been adequately researched.

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
