What heather is
the flower of heather (Callunae flos)
Heather (Calluna vulgaris) is a low evergreen shrublet with small scale-like leaves and a mass of small pink flowers, flowering in late summer and autumn, when most plants have long since gone over. It grows on bogs, on heaths and on poor acid soil, often in the company of the bilberry.
The flowering tips are gathered in August and September, in dry weather; the upper part of the shoot is cut and it is never pulled up. It is dried in the shade; dried flowers keep their pink colour and shed easily, so the drug is handled with care.
Heather is an important forage for bees and gives a dark, aromatic honey. In Ašič's collection the flower of heather appears in Men's Tea, where it is one of the few ingredients of its kind.
Use and evidence
There is no good clinical evidence for either of the two species for treating the urinary tract, rheumatism, diabetes or cancer.
Safety and precautions
The safety of concentrated preparations is not well established; pooling the composition and effects of two species is not acceptable.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
