Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a perennial of the buttercup family which, in the shade of North American deciduous woods, sends up white flower spikes as slender as candles, to two metres tall. Here it is grown in gardens. The rhizome with its roots is used. Traditionally used for complaints of the menopause.

Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a perennial of the buttercup family which grows to two metres in the shade of North American deciduous woods and has long white racemes. Here it grows only in gardens, so the drug used is imported, with its origin confirmed.
The rhizome with its roots is used. It is dug in autumn after the parts above ground have died back, in the fourth or fifth year of growth; it is washed, cut up and dried at a low temperature.
Because the plant is imported, and because several related species of the genus Actaea are not interchangeable with it, the Latin name on the label is essential when buying. In Ašič's collection the rhizome of black cohosh appears in the MenoSIT blend, where it is the main ingredient and where it is found in no other blend.
Use and evidence
The EMA recognises well established use for complaints of the menopause, above all hot flushes and heavy sweating, and only in adult women. It does not replace hormone treatment and is not intended for treating osteoporosis or other consequences of the menopause. EMA.
Safety and precautions
Intended for adult women. Liver damage has been recorded: with tiredness, loss of appetite, yellowed skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine or severe pain in the upper abdomen with nausea and vomiting, use must be stopped at once and a doctor seen. Allergic skin reactions, swelling of the face and limbs and digestive trouble are also possible. Without consulting a doctor, use should not go on for longer than six months.

The instructions differ from blend to blend. For MenoSIT they are: Pour 3 decilitres of boiling water over two teaspoons of the blend. Leave it covered for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink it freshly made, several times a day, within 2 hours of brewing. If you like, enrich the tea with a spoonful of apple cider vinegar.
