Anise
Pimpinella anisum L
Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is an annual of the carrot family with a sweet scent, often confused with star anise, although the two are quite different plants. The fruit is used. Traditionally used for wind and as an ingredient of teas to make coughing up easier.
What anise is
the fruit of anise (Anisi fructus)
Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is an annual of the carrot family with white umbels and fruit of a markedly sweet scent. It is native to the eastern Mediterranean and is sown here in the garden; it needs a warm, long summer for the fruit to ripen.
The fruit is gathered when the umbels have turned brown, usually in September. The shoots are cut, tied and hung over a cloth so that the fruit drops out; it is then winnowed and dried at a low temperature.
Anise must not be confused with star anise (Illicium verum), which is the fruit of a different tree from Asia, nor with anise liqueur. In Ašič's collection the fruit of anise appears in the BebeSIT, VetroviSIT and Appetite Tea blends.
Use and evidence
The EMA recognises traditional use to relieve mild cramps of the digestive tract with wind, and use as an expectorant for a cough with a cold. EMA 1, EMA 2.
