Coltsfoot
Tussilago farfara L
Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is an early spring perennial which puts out yellow flowers first and only then its large leaves, beside paths and on embankments. The leaf was traditionally used for a cough, but the plant can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids harmful to the liver, so its use today is limited.
What coltsfoot is
the leaf of coltsfoot (Farfarae folium)
Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is an early spring perennial which first puts out yellow flower heads on scaly stems and, only after they have gone over, large heart-shaped leaves, white and felted underneath. It grows on clay banks, on embankments, on building sites and beside streams.
The flowers are gathered in March, as soon as they open; the leaves in May and June, while they are young and not yet scorched. Both are dried quickly in the shade, the leaves spread out in a single layer, because they are fleshy.
Coltsfoot contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so it is used only for short periods and in preparations where the content of those substances is controlled; long-term use is not appropriate. The flowers resemble the dandelion's, but appear earlier and on a bare stem.
Use and evidence
Because of the safety concerns, home-made preparations are not appropriate to recommend for a cough or for diseases of the lungs; any product must have a demonstrably controlled alkaloid content and the proper status.
Safety and precautions
Internal use of unregulated preparations is not advised, above all in diseases of the liver, in pregnancy, while breastfeeding and in children.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
