What agrimony is
the herb of agrimony (Agrimoniae herba)
Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) is an upright perennial with a long spike of small yellow flowers and pinnately divided leaves, hairy on the underside. The fruits are hooked and catch on clothing, which is how the plant is recognised in autumn as well. It grows in dry meadows, at the edges of woods and on embankments.
The flowering herb is gathered in June and July, when the lower third of the spike is open; the upper part of the shoot is cut, without the hard stem. It is dried in the shade, in a thin layer.
Agrimony is rich in tannins and therefore astringent. In Ašič's collection the herb of agrimony appears in the HepaSIT blend, where it shares three fifths with yarrow and artichoke.
Use and evidence
The EMA recognises traditional use for mild diarrhoea, mild inflammation of the mouth and throat and minor superficial inflammation of the skin. It does not support the treatment of the liver, tuberculosis or heavier bleeding. EMA.
Safety and precautions
Tannins can affect the absorption of medicines taken at the same time; with bloody diarrhoea, a fever or dehydration, a doctor is needed.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
