Arnica Ointment

Arnica is a perennial of the daisy family (Asteraceae), 20 to 70 cm tall. The stem is glandular and hairy. On the stem grows an orange-yellow flower head.

In ointments we use extracts of arnica flowers. Arnica contains essential oils (5 mL/kg) and sesquiterpene lactones (from 0.2 to 0.5 % helenalin and others). Also present are phytosterols, polysaccharides, coumarins, phenolic acids and carotenoids, which give the flower head its yellow colour. In experiments on mice helenalin showed an anti-inflammatory action. In mice with arthritis it also reduced pain. In laboratories it has been shown that arnica also acts against microbes and fungi and reduces the aggregation of platelets (prevents the clotting of blood). We use it for bruises, contusions, dislocations, sprains and fractures, because it acts against inflammation and pain and prevents the formation of blood clots. Because of its antimicrobial action it also reduces the possibility of infection of the bruised or injured place. It improves healing, and the polysaccharides in arnica stimulate the work of the immune system. In patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, arnica in a clinical study reduced pain and stiffness and improved the function of the knee. In a clinical study in patients with varicose veins there was a reduction in tension and swelling of the legs and pain in the legs. We use arnica only externally, because of the toxicity of the sesquiterpene lactones.
