What white horehound is
the leaf of white horehound (Marrubium folium)
White horehound (Marrubium vulgare) belongs to the mint family, but it is not a mint of the genus Mentha. It has wrinkled, greyish felted leaves and small white flowers in dense whorls around the stem. It grows on dry, sunny ground, beside paths, on embankments and on ruins.
The flowering herb is gathered in July and August, in dry weather; the upper part of the shoot is cut. It is dried in the shade, in a thin layer.
The plant is markedly bitter and is one of the older herbs of folk tradition, known from the writings of antiquity. It should not be confused with the mints of the genus Mentha, which are quite different plants with the scent of menthol.
