What tormentil is
the rhizome of tormentil (Tormentillae rhizoma)
Tormentil (Potentilla erecta) is a low perennial with four yellow petals, which is how it is told from the other cinquefoils, which have five. The rhizome is reddish where it is cut and darkens further in the air. It grows on bogs, in damp meadows and in open woodland, on acid soil.
The rhizome is dug in autumn or early spring; it is washed, cut up and dried at a low temperature. Dried, it is hard, dark brown and markedly astringent, because it is the richest in tannins of our native plants.
Because of that astringency it is used in small quantities and for short periods, as a gargle too. Its Slovenian name, heart's strength, comes from folk tradition and not from any action on the heart.
Use and evidence
The traditional use is limited to the short-term relief of mild diarrhoea and of mild inflammation of the mouth and throat. It does not treat cancer, heavy bleeding or chronic bowel disease. EMA.
Safety and precautions
Tannins can irritate the stomach and reduce the absorption of medicines; with bloody diarrhoea, a fever or dehydration, an examination is needed.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
