What lingonberry is
the leaf of lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea folium)
The lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) is a low evergreen shrublet of the heather family, with leathery leaves dotted underneath and red, sour berries. It grows in conifer woods, on bogs and high in the mountains, on acid and poor soil, often together with the bilberry.
The fruit is gathered from August to October, when it is bright red; the leaves are gathered in spring before flowering or in autumn after the picking. The leaves are dried in the shade, the fruit quickly and at a low temperature, because it is juicy.
The lingonberry is often confused with the American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), a different species with larger fruit that comes from plantations in North America. The native lingonberry is protected in some parts of Slovenia and is gathered sparingly.
Use and evidence
There is not enough good clinical evidence for this species to treat urinary infections, rheumatism, diabetes or cancer. It must not be confused with the American cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon.
Safety and precautions
The leaf contains arbutin compounds and is not suitable for uncritical long-term use; the safety of a preparation depends on the part used and on the dose.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
