Horse chestnut
Aesculus hippocastanum L
The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a great tree with palmate leaves and spiny fruit, familiar from avenues and parks. The seed is used, in standardised extracts. Traditionally used for the feeling of heavy legs.
What horse chestnut is
the seed of horse chestnut (Hippocastani semen)
The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a great tree with palmate leaves, white flowers in upright spikes and spiny fruit holding shiny brown seeds. It grows in avenues, in parks and beside churches; in Stična one stands by the path.
The seeds are used. They are collected in September and October, when they fall, and are cut up fresh and dried, because otherwise they spoil quickly; the bark of young branches and the flower are used as well.
The horse chestnut is not edible and must not be confused with the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), which has long toothed leaves and edible fruit; children mix the two up often. In Ašič's collection it appears in Horse Chestnut Ointment for the care of the legs.
Use and evidence
The EMA recognises certain standardised dry extracts of the seed for chronic venous insufficiency as well established use, and other preparations only as traditional. Crude home-made preparations are not suitable. EMA 1, EMA 2.
Safety and precautions
The raw parts are poisonous; digestive symptoms, headache, dizziness and allergies are possible. Swelling of one leg, an ulcer or sudden pain call for a doctor.
These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
