About the herb

What herb robert is

the herb of herb Robert (Geranii robertiani herba)

Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) is a low annual or biennial with deeply divided leaves and small pink flowers. It is recognised by its reddish stem and by the strong smell of a crushed leaf, which many find unpleasant; in autumn the whole plant turns red, and that is where the Slovenian name comes from.

The flowering herb is gathered from May to September, without the root, in dry weather. It is dried quickly in the shade, because it is succulent and blackens if the drying is slow.

The genus Geranium has several similar species here; the smell and the red stem are the most reliable way to tell herb Robert from them. It grows in the shade, along walls, at the edges of woods and in gardens as a weed.

Use and evidence

There is no good clinical evidence for treating cancer, infertility, diabetes, bleeding or diseases of the kidneys.

Safety and precautions

These notes are general and do not replace advice from a doctor or a pharmacist, above all in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, in children and alongside medicines.
