Colds

In the colder months colds often appear, such as influenza, bronchitis, tonsillitis, a runny nose, headaches, a cough and a raised body temperature.

By a cold we understand a feeling of being unwell caused by viruses, especially when our organism is less resistant. The most common companions of a cold are sneezing, a cough and a runny nose.

Mullein is an exceptional medicinal plant for use in a cough because it has a double action. Thanks to its high content of mucilage (up to 3 %), mullein eases a dry cough. It covers the mucous membrane of the upper airways and so protects it from irritation. Damaged cells protected by the mucilage can thus renew themselves and be made ready for the task of coughing up. The saponins in mullein make coughing up easier because they very slightly irritate the vomiting centre, just enough that we feel a mild nausea and are therefore urged to cough. In this the glands in the airways become more active and secrete thin mucus, which thins the sticky and thick bronchial mucus and so it can be coughed up more easily, or slides more easily along the airways. The tannins in mullein act against viruses.

We use mullein for mucus on the lungs, a viral illness accompanied by a dry or productive (with sputum) cough, asthma, a runny nose, whooping cough and bronchitis.

For help and for overcoming a cold and a cough more easily we recommend a product made from mullein: Mullein Syrup and Chest Tea.
