Varicose veins are unnaturally widened veins through which the flow of venous blood is obstructed. They most often appear on the legs. Varicose veins are most often the result of chronic venous insufficiency, which arises from a tendency to blood clotting and inflammation of the veins of the lower limbs. In one word this phenomenon is called deep vein thrombosis.
Signs of chronic venous insufficiency:
· swelling in the area of the ankle and shin,
· tired, burning and aching legs,
· a feeling of heaviness in the legs,
· tension and cramps in the calves,
· itching,
· in more severe cases open wounds (ulcers) also appear.
The risk factors connected with the development of chronic venous insufficiency are many and include: age, sex, a family history (heredity), excess body weight, pregnancy, earlier injuries to the legs. Surrounding and behavioural factors also play a part, including standing for long periods at work or mainly sedentary work. Walking and movement help; while sitting, the legs should be raised.
The most common measure in chronic venous insufficiency is compression treatment, which includes wrapping with a compression bandage or wearing medical compression stockings.
Among the medicinal plants used to ease peripheral circulatory disorders we use horse chestnut, hawthorn, buckwheat and common yarrow. As a complementary treatment of chronic venous insufficiency we most often use horse chestnut preparations.
